Weekly Didactics

Protected program education is via video & in-person conference from our three major sites: Ascension St. John, Providence Southfield and Providence Novi. Starting at weekly at 7:00am, resident & attending lectures are followed by OITE-based questions. Lectures are based on a year long comprehensive curriculum.

The first 3 months of weekly didactics are dedicated to surgical anatomy & surgical approaches, followed by 2 months of dedicated OITE review. The next several months include a comprehensive curriculum covering a wide compliment of orthopedic topics.

 Anatomy Lab

Residents spend the first 3 months of each year reviewing anatomy on Wednesday mornings. Initial discussions about osteology, embryology, soft tissue attachments, and clinical correlates are led by the PGY-1 residents. Cadaveric demonstrations and surgical approaches are demonstrated by the PGY-2 residents. The senior residents prepare junior residents for important clinical correlates, physical exam maneuvers and their implications, anatomic implications intra-operatively, as well as anticipated OITE/Board correlations. Present as well are attendings who specialize in each week's region (e.g.Trauma attending during pelvis/acetabulum) who also help guide education and provide expert insight.

Trauma Conference

Residents on the trauma service attend x-ray conference each thursday morning from 7:15-8:15am. Interesting and/or educational cases from the previous week and upcoming cases are reviewed. Discussions include reviewing radiographic knowledge, immediate management, operative management, with higher-level discussion led by Dr. Benjamin Best, Dr. Alan Afsari, and Dr. Adam Fahs, the fellowship trained orthopedic trauma attendings. Journal articles may be discussed as well.

Recon/Sports/Spine Conference

Residents rotating at Providence Novi & Southfield in either Adult Reconstruction, Sports, or Spine rotations, attend thursday morning conference from 7:30-8:30am. On a rotating schedule, the conferences will include case presentations, journal club discussion, radiology rounds, morbidity & mortality all resident led with expert input from attendings. Additionally, one week each month the conference will include an orthopedic service line, where residents get first hand look into the inner-workings of managing a hospital-wide orthopedic service.

Journal Club

Journal clubs are an important time to discuss recent developments in orthopedic surgery. They are also a time to learn how to think critically about evidence based medicine. We have regular journal clubs focused around a specific topic such as trauma or pediatrics. Its also a great time to hear the thoughts and opinions of our seasoned attending surgeons and industry developments.

Educational & Industry Sponsored Courses

Residents are encouraged to attend educational courses such as AO Trauma Basic & Advanced Course, and the DePuy Synthes Future Leaders in Arthroplasty Courses (Basic & Advanced) to help build a foundation for Orthopedic Trauma & Adult Reconstruction.

Additionally, residents frequently attend industry-sponsored events to learn and practice with various surgical and robotic systems for trauma, adult reconstruction, and arthroscopy.
